Abstract Music could be referred to as a universal language, for instance it has more purposeful values than just for listening and people of all ages and backgrounds enjoy interaction with it every day worldwide. Throughout this research project music will be shown to work as an effective therapy and demonstrate how interaction with it can improve quality of life in Alzheimer s sufferers. Alzheimer s disease is only one of many forms of dementia which causes irreversible decline of the brain. This disease not only affects the patient but their support networks of family, friends and caregivers through behavioural difficulty and communication. In addition to this, it is estimated that of over 20% of sufferers 80.000 are being treated using antipsychotic medication as a first hand tactic in dealing with the many issues of the disease such as agitation, depression and anxiety, rather than only trying medication as an alternative if or when non-pharmacological treatment such as music therapy fails. Music therapy has many objectives for example it aims to; improve cognition, manage behavioural difficulties and slow down the rate of the disease, overall trying to improve quality of life for sufferers. This themed research project is a literature review focussing on how interaction with music can help people with Alzheimer s regain a sense of feeling alive.
